De film is gemaakt door Chris Meledandri, oprichter en CEO van Illumination, en Shigeru Miyamoto van Nintendo. Universal Pictures en Nintendo zullen de film cofinancieren, die wereldwijd zal worden gedistribueerd door Universal Pictures.
