Electronic Arts talking with a number of potential buyers?

Following a string of high-profile acquisitions in the video game industry, a fresh rumor claims that another large publisher is wanting to be purchased, being EA.

According to the newspaper Puck, the publisher in question is none other than Electronic Arts (EA). According to writer Dylan Byers, EA and its CEO Andrew Wilson have apparently already conducted negotiations with “a number of different possible bidders,” including heavyweights such as Disney, Amazon, Apple, and NBCUniversal. According to Bryers’ sources, EA has been “persistent” in its pursuit of acquisition, with a handful of plausible reasons and justifications for this move:

In recent years, as media firms have become more interested in the fast developing gaming business, Wilson and Electronic Arts have conducted negotiations with a variety of possible bidders, including Disney, Apple, and Amazon, individuals with knowledge of those talks told me.

According to people involved with the discussions, EA has been tenacious in seeking a sale, and has become even more confident in the aftermath of the Microsoft-Activision transaction.” Others claim that EA is only interested in a merger agreement that allows Wilson to continue as CEO of the merged firm.

EA denies being open to be purchases

In a response to Kotaku, EA refused to comment on the reports, noting that the firm is still in a position of “strength and development,” with a “promising future ahead”:

We don’t comment on rumors and speculation relating to M&A, but we are proud to be operating from a position of strength and growth, with a portfolio of amazing games built around powerful IP, made by incredibly talented teams, and a network of more than half a billion players,” said EA spokesperson John Reseburg. We anticipate a very bright future.

We urge readers to take these reports with a grain of salt, as they should with any rumors of this sort.
