Nintendo has reminded customers that the Nintendo eShop services for Wii U and 3DS would be discontinued on the 30th of the next month, as was stated by the company at the same time last year. They have further clarified that the consolidation service, which enables users to merge their unused Nintendo eShop balance on those two systems with their Nintendo Account and then spend that balance on the Nintendo Switch eShop, will end in March of 2024. This service allows users to spend their balances on the Switch eShop.
Nintendo noted the following on the single account service
It will no longer be allowed to make purchases on the Nintendo eShop for the Wii U system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems as of the end of March 2023. This change will take effect. Also, it won’t be allowed to download free material, including demos of games you’ve already purchased. In addition, as the date approaches, the following associated services will be rendered inoperable:
It will no longer be allowed to contribute money to a Nintendo eShop account on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of devices with a credit card as of May 23, 2022. This change will take effect across all Nintendo platforms.
– It will no longer be able to add cash to a Nintendo eShop account on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of devices with a Nintendo eShop Card after the 29th of August, 2022. This change will take effect across all Nintendo platforms. Nonetheless, until the end of March in 2023, it will continue to be able to redeem download vouchers.
– Users who link their Nintendo Network ID wallet (used with the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems) with their Nintendo Account wallet (used with the Nintendo Switch family of systems) will be able to use the shared balance to purchase content for any of these systems until the end of March 2023. This feature will be available to users who link their wallets. Following that, the balance may be used only toward the acquisition of content for the Nintendo Switch family of gaming consoles.
There are currently no plans to implement any modifications to the Nintendo eShop that is available on the Nintendo Switch family of consoles.
The modifications that were made to the Nintendo eShop on the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems will simultaneously take effect in the software that is available for these platforms and allows users to make purchases. Examples of this type of software include StreetPass Mii Plaza, Theme Shop, and Nintendo Badge Arcade.
Even after the end of March 2023, users of the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems will be able to continue to redownload games and downloadable content (DLC), get software updates, and participate in online play. This will remain the case for the foreseeable future.
We are appreciative of your continued patronage of Nintendo eShop for Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of devices.
