Niantic Labs said that they are now working on Marvel World of Heroes, which looks like a new superhero-themed augmented reality (AR) mobile game. At the moment, it’s not clear what kind of game Marvel World of Heroes will be or if it will be like Pokemon GO in terms of how it works.
But a press release says that it will be “the first Marvel game where players can be their own unique Marvel Super Hero.”

The team behind the game has been working hard to make the dream of becoming your own Marvel Super Hero a reality. We talked to two people on the MARVEL World of Heroes team to find out what it was like to work on the game, now that they can talk about it in public.

How has it been to work on the MARVEL World of Heroes game?
It’s been fun to make a game with this talented and dedicated team that gives players a taste of the Super Hero lifestyle right in their own neighborhoods. I want the people who play this game to feel free, powerful, curious, and able to work together. I also want them to be inspired to make the world a better place. – Neil Melville, Lead Game Designer
As a producer for MARVEL World of Heroes, the best part is that I get to see all of the team’s great work through the eyes of both a player and a game developer. Some days, my life is all about running the team, and other days, I work with our creative and technology leads on new features. – Lyza Faylona, Senior Producer
What part of the game are you most excited for players to experience?
The character avatar system in MARVEL World of Heroes is very exciting to me because it gives players a lot of freedom to show different body types, gender expressions, and clothes. I can’t wait to see what kind of characters the players come up with on their way to becoming well-known heroes in their own towns. – NM
I love MMORPGs, so bringing them to the real world is what I’m most looking forward to. I’m most excited about being able to go somewhere, look at it and do things with it through the eyes of a Marvel Super Hero. I can’t wait to see how players interact with these places and make up their own stories about how they got there. – LF
Which Marvel character is your favorite, and why?
Spider-Man is my favorite Marvel Super Hero because, even though he is very smart and has super strength and agility, he never stops being a friendly neighborhood hero who has to deal with normal problems as well as crime bosses, robots, aliens, vampires, and robot alien vampire crime bosses. – NM
I’m more interested in Super Villains than Super Heroes, but if you asked me who my favorite MARVEL Super Hero is, I’d say Ms. Marvel, whose real name is Kamala Khan. Her story about how she became a superhero really speaks to me, especially how she deals with the labels people put on her and how she finds herself by embracing her superpower. – LF
What do you think might surprise Marvel fans the first time they play MARVEL World of Heroes?
We won’t be happy just adding a single version of the Marvel Universe to reality. Instead, the Marvel Multiverse will let you travel to different versions of the Marvel Universe and interact with different characters and stories in the same place. – NM
Marvel’s many universes. We couldn’t choose just one reality because there are so many stories to tell and MARVEL characters to interact with. – LF
