Nintendo president – Transitioning large user base to next-gen hardware

Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo’s president, addressed to investors about one of the company’s main worries regarding its next-generation hardware platform.

Mr. Furukawa told investors that one of the biggest challenges they’ll have is converting the Nintendo Switch’s massive user base to their next-generation video gaming console. This has been a huge issue for Nintendo in the past, much more so than Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox brands.

The Kyoto-based business is sadly  infamous for releasing an extremely popular system and then following it up with a console that isn’t as popular.

How to transition the large user base to next-gen hardware

We’ve already published a chunk of our software plan that will be available in the spring. Unlike in the past, we continue to have a wide range of titles planned for release, even after five years.” This is due to the Nintendo Switch’s seamless launch, which has allowed us to concentrate all of our development efforts on a single platform.

However, we are concerned about whether we will be able to move from the Nintendo Switch to the next generation of hardware as seamlessly as possible.” Based on our experiences with the Wii, Nintendo DS, and other gear, it’s evident that one of the biggest challenges is transitioning from one piece of hardware to the next.

We’re concentrating on creating long-term connections with our clients to help mitigate this risk.” While we will continue to release new Nintendo Switch software, we will also provide services that employ Nintendo Accounts and other IP outside of game software. We hope that this will help us make a lasting impression on our consumers.
