Nintendo quickly chose to cancel the Smash World Tour through a stop and desist letter, which caught the event organizers off guard and has supposedly left them with financial difficulties as a result of the event’s last-minute cancellation.
Nintendo’s statement to IGN
The firm explained to IGN why they chose to cancel their license for the Smash World Tour tournament.
“The decision was completely based on our examination of the SWT’s plans and our judgment of their unauthorized actions.” Any partner to whom we provide a license must fulfill the high standards we demand in terms of our supporters’ health and safety.”
“It is also critical that a partner follows brand and intellectual property requirements and conducts itself in accordance with professional and organizational best practices.” We utilize the same method to evaluate all partners individually. If we learn that a partner is engaging in improper behavior, we will try to remedy it.”
