Sega did consider Saturn / Dreamcast Mini but costs were just too much

Famitsu, a Japanese gaming journal, spoke with Sega’s classic hardware producer Yosuke Okunari about the recently revealed Mega Drive Mini 2.

Famitsu inquired of Mr. Okunari if they had considered releasing a Sega Saturn Mini or Sega Dreamcast Mini. Okunari said that they had, but owing to semiconductor shortages caused by COVID-19, as well as the internal expenditures of building Saturn Mini or Dreamcast Mini, they finally opted against it. The Mega Drive Mini 2 will be released in Japan in October and will have 50 games, including those from the Sega Mega CD. The Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 has yet to be released in the West.

SEGA did consider them

“Some of you may remark, ‘This isn’t a Sega Saturn Mini,’ or ‘I wanted a Dreamcast Mini,’ and it’s not that we didn’t consider such possibilities.” The Coronavirus has slowed the development of new boards, and it would be a rather costly product in terms of cost.”

That is not a it will never happen answer … so there is hope!
