Shantae and the Seven Sirens released on Nintendo Switch, the fifth installment in the Half-Genie Hero’s now 18-year old series. Games on Nintendo’s platform are dating back to the Game Boy Color era so Shantae has been around afor a while now.
From these humble beginnings, Shantae has since then become a major gaming icon and representative of the indie scene.
Speaking to Comicbook, WayForward’s Matt Bozon shared his thoughts on the character’s success, and dropped the reveal that her series has recently crossed 3 million in sales.
Millions of sales
Yes. Shantae fans are awesome. They have this increasing demand that keeps us constantly moving. Honestly, we’ve been so busy that we sometimes forget that she’s having these milestone moments. For example, last year marked 25 years since we created Shantae!
And somewhere along the line she broke 3 million copies sold, but, now that I think about it, we didn’t celebrate when it reached 1 million. I guess this…right now…we can celebrate with a TOOT!
If fans keep commenting, streaming, posting fanart, Shantae will keep growing and we’ll never get a chance to slow down. And that would be amazing!
Meet Shantae
Shantae is the main protagonist of the Shantae series. The half-genie guardian of Scuttle Town, Shantae works tirelessly to thwart the plans of the nefarious lady-pirate, Risky Boots (her nemesis), or other forces threatening the town. She was created by Matt Bozon and Erin Bozon.
Shantae is a half-genie charged with protecting her home, Scuttle Town. Shantae utilizes her magical abilities to help her in her adventures.
As the Guardian Genie of Scuttle Town, Shantae lives in a lighthouse by the sea where she can spot incoming ships and trouble. During the events of the first game, she is portrayed at the beginning as young and somewhat naïve. In addition, her strong sense of justice drives her to help people in need. She chases Risky Boots across the map in order to stop her plans and has a strong enmity for the pirate as a result.
From our own experience all her games have been instant favorites, so go check them out on Nintendo Switch for sure!
