Radical Entertainment and Vivendi released Simpsons Hit & Run, a game which combined GTA-style gameplay with the world of The Simpsons quite a while back.
A modder by the name of Reubs decided to try remaking the game in Unreal Engine 5. He started off by using a tool created by fellow developer Lucas Cardellini to rip the map of Springfield from the original, then added textures manually and with the assistance of AI.
After that, Reubs moved on to recreating the characters, UI, and other gameplay elements, which eventually cumulated in a playable segment from the game’s opening. Impressively, this entire process apparently only too Reubs a week to complete.
Inspiring?
His’ video naturally attracted a lot of attention from fans of the show and the game. Joe McGinn, the lead designer of the original game even left a comment praising Reubs for his work:
Hi, I’m the lead designer on the original game. Amazing what you accomplished! Really gives a taste of what a full modern remaster could be. Impressive work!
The video seems that it has since been taken down due to copyright concerns. That said, perhaps the attention Reubs’ project it getting might inspire an official remake of the game down the line. Who knows … as also a Arcade1Up is coming later this year.
