Eiji Aonuma teased the remake of Zelda: Link’s Awakening in 2016

What may surprise you is that Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma teased a Zelda game a few years before it was announced, and no one noticed.

Living on the EDGE

In 2016, Aonuma was interviewed by EDGE magazine. When EDGE asked him what he wanted to do next, Aonuma said “actually, Nintendo has been telling me to create a new IP. But then, they’re also telling me to make more Zelda games. I can’t really share much; I’m not sure I’m allowed to say anything. But I really like the idea of a game where I can live as a thief. That’s all I’ll say”.

Aonuma’s “live as a thief” tease refers to an encounter that Link has with a shopkeeper in Zelda: Link’s Awakening. 3 years later, in this month’s EDGE issue, the team decided to ask Aonuma if he had teased the remake of Link’s Awakening that day. Aonuma laughed, then admitted that he did, indeed, tease the game.
