Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes – Why Byleth became a villain

IGN spoke with Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes director Hayato Iwata and producer Yosuke Hayashi about the recently launched game.

They explicitly questioned why they chose Byleth, the hero of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, as the villain of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. They said that Byleth is one of the most attractive characters in the first game, and they decided that they wanted to emphasize her personality and charm even more in Three Hopes.

Hayato Iwata is the director of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

“We had the Three Houses scenario writer also handle the scripting for this title.” So, when I spoke with this writer, I brought up the following point: ‘Although Byleth represents the player, they are also one of the attractive characters.’ So making Byleth an opponent is a vital step in bringing out the character’s attractiveness.”

“We believed that the fundamental topic of Three Houses was ‘the difficulties that result from the individuals’ opposing views,’ yet the only character who had no such difficulty was Byleth,” he said. “This is understandable given that Byleth is the primary character, and the chosen path is always presented as the proper one.”

Yosuke Hayashi, the director of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

“In Three Hopes, we chose Byleth as the adversary in order to further explore this concept.” We hoped that by doing so, gamers would be able to experience “the tensions that come from the characters’ opposing ideas” in both Three Houses and Three Hopes.”
