Nintendo Switch Online growing thanks to Splatoon 2 and Smash

During Nintendo’s Q&A session for investors, an investor asked for  details on how Nintendo Switch Online is doing, and Nintendo’s plans going forward.

Nintendo President and global CEO Shuntaro Furukawa says retaining customers is very important, and to ensure customers remain subscribed they will enhance the contents of the service throughout 2019.

Growth pushed by software

Initial uptake in Nintendo Switch Online was contributed primarily from Splatoon 2, which should be no surprise as Splatoon 2 is a very popular game in Japan and other parts of the world. After Splatoon 2, further growth was driven by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Furukawa also revealed more customers are purchasing monthly subscriptions over the family plan and annual plan.

And while the service is doing ok, in the year 2019 it will have to pickup and show it is able to contend with the variants offered by both Sony and Microsoft.

How are you thinking the Nintendo Switch Online service is shaping up?
