No plans for Virtual Console

Nintendo recently announced a few things about the upcoming Nintendo Switch Online service.

A part of the paid service is a selection of NES games with added online functionality. Twenty classic games will be available at the launch, after which more will be added later. On the Wii, Wii U and 3DS classic games could also be played via the Virtual Console, with the big difference that each game had to be purchased separately.

Virtual Console

It seems more and more like a Virtual Console as we had on the previous consoles and handhelds from Nintendo, becoming increasingly unlikely. To get more clarity, Kotaku has received an e-mail response to the question whether the Switch will also receive a Virtual Console service.

A Nintendo spokesperson said the following:

There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the umbrella of the Virtual Console as has been done on other Nintendo systems.

Kotaku also asked whether the Nintendo Switch Online service would focus on other classic consoles besides the NES, but Nintendo indicated “nothing to report on this subject”.

For many people this will be a huge setback because the Virtual Console was one of the most popular services on the previous generation of consoles and handhelds.

It is still possible that Nintendo will publish titles of, for example, the SNES and Nintendo 64 alongside NES games via its new online service, but it continues to be in the dark for now.
