Secret firmware feature – GameCube Virtual Console coming?

The Nintendo Switch has received a new firmware (4.0) last week, but Nintendo has not provided all the information about what was new in this update. A new feature has been discovered, which is probably a tip of the veil for something scheduled for the Nintendo Switch in the near future.

It is now possible to use GameCube controllers on the Nintendo Switch.

However, you do need the Wii U GameCube Adapter, which was sold when Super Smash Bros came out for the Wii U. You can play Nintendo Switch games, only one minor problem; The Gamecube controllers miss an additional Z button, which can cause problems when required in certain games.

What’s good to report is that Wavebird controllers (the wireless versions of the GameCube controllers) also work. A few of our editors have tested this successfully.

Why Gamecube controller support?

It is therefore not obvious that this feature has been added to play Nintendo Switch titles. We suspect that the Nintendo GameCube controller now works because Nintendo wants to offer Nintendo Gamecube games through the means of Virtual Console.

The Nintendo Switch does not have any analog shoulder buttons and therefore not all GameCube games would be playable with a Nintendo Switch control schema.

We are already looking forward to a Gamecube Virtual Console and have our Wavebirds ready for when it happens!
