If you’re a Nintendo Switch owner, and you have digital games on your console, then this news may really interest you.
Share digital
You will now be able to designate a Nintendo Switch console as the “primary console”, then make other Switch consoles “non-primary consoles”. This will allow digital sharing across multiple Switch consoles via your Nintendo Account, something that has been highly requested by fans.
However, there are a few catches.
If a non-primary Nintendo Switch player is playing a game, and the primary Switch console player begins to do the same, then the non-primary player will have to stop. Non-primary consoles are also required to have an internet connection to play. Also, according to Nintendo, “when using downloadable software on a non-primary console, your game will pause if your Nintendo Account is used to access downloadable software on any other Nintendo Switch console”. Lastly, downloadable content can only be started by the user that purchased it.
In practice
It seems to work quite well, and with some clever thinking you can really share libraries. As that border to piracy we will not go into detail on that front. While we do touch that subject really brief; this seems like somewhat good news for the people who have been banned and superbanned by Nintendo.
Banned normally means banned from online, which also means no eshop. Superbanned means banned online and from Nintendo’s CDN. That CDN means; no eshop, but also no push downloads of titels you actually buy or updates etc.
The main thing is; those bans are console / cert related. And not account related it seems.
With this current action Nintendo actually might have opened the door a bit for those banned people as you can also now without any action from Nintendo, deregister you primary console. And thus get that access back on a new Nintendo Switch. Sure it still requires a new console but then you essentially have a bad banned one and a clean legal one.
We feel a bit conflicted about that move.
Do you think that last part is an oversight on Nintendo’s side?
