Tetsuya Takahashi, senior director and chief creative officer of Monolith Soft, has said that Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the series’ “climax.” However, rather than signifying the conclusion of the franchise, it is a “summary for the next stage.”
This information was given by Takahashi in a recently released interview with director/producer Koh Kojima and Nintendo’s Genki Yokota.
Director/producer Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on the Culmination
So, this is the third installment in the series; but, where does it fall within the series?
Takahashi: This is the third and final installment in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, after Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The first installment describes how the protagonist and his friends in the universe of Bionis, the deity, use the Monado, a future-seeing sword, to safeguard their planet and battle for the future. The second episode presents a tale of limited and endless existence, in which the protagonist, who lives in the Titans’ land in the sky, meets an immortal Blade girl, and the two struggle together to attain heaven. This third edition is a tale of six young warriors from two antagonistic countries, located in Aionios, where the worlds of the first and second games intersect.
If the setting of this title is connected to that of the first and second entries, does this imply that the plot continues across all three titles?
Takahashi: No, each of the three storylines stands on its own. Although certain aspects and designs from one and two will sometimes show in this third installment, it is not necessary to have played the first and second games to grasp the plot or how to play. Due to the fact that this is a series of works, the underlying concept is continuous, and in each instance “the connection between alien objects” serves as the basis for the plot. Also, I used the term “culmination” before, but this game pulls together all the concepts that have been created over the previous 15 years since 2007, when production of the first Xenoblade Chronicles game started, as well as all the gameplay elements that have been developed throughout the series.
Yokota: So, by “culmination,” you do not mean that it concludes the series, but rather that it conceptually completes the trilogy.
Takahashi: Yes, it is correct. This might be considered a summary for going on to the following phase in the future.
