Capcom – Monster Hunter Rise – RE Engine

Capcom has been working on its RE Engine for a few years, but it wasn’t until 2021 that we saw the technology used in Nintendo Switch titles. The RE Engine served as the foundation for Monster Hunter Rise, a notable game.

Programmer Kotaro Miyabe spoke about developing Monster Hunter Rise with the RE Engine in mind for the Switch as part of the 2021 Capcom Integrated Report. Read the whole of his remarks below.

RE Engine in Monster Hunter Rise

“The decision was taken to build MHRise utilizing RE Engine, and I served as a RE Engine engineer on the title’s development team. My role was to link the developers with the technical department in charge of engine development, and our goal was to achieve both reliable performance and the finest possible quality on the Nintendo Switch. I was primarily responsible for choosing and implementing graphics technology as well as improving the game’s overall performance. It was a huge task to make online cooperative play with up to four people, four Buddies, three major monsters, and a slew of lesser monsters and environmental animals work in one place. Furthermore, we discovered techniques to push the technology to its utmost in order to provide a pleasant gaming experience with stunning images and fast loading times. It was a huge pleasure for me to be allowed to work on the apparently uninteresting components of this game as an engineer.”

The Nintendo Switch version of Monster Hunter Rise is now available. In Summer 2022, the game will get a big expansion called Sunbreak.
