Studio PIXEL – How Kero Blaster Was Named, Story and more

1Print Games released an interview with Kero Blaster and Cave Story creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya.

The game developer was asked several interesting questions about the development of Kero Blaster. First, Pixel was asked how Gero Blaster, the predecessor to Kero Blaster, got its name:

Giving it a name

‘When I was talking about Gero Blaster while waiting on some udon at a restaurant, my kid said “You shouldn’t talk about puke (‘gero’) at a restaurant,” which was how it began. Now, I feel that “Kero Blaster” was the best name for it after all, and I’m really satisfied with that name.’

Pixel also mentioned that the frog in Kero Blaster, also known as Hero, first appeared in his sketches as early as 2000:

“I tried looking for the old data, and the frog with the necktie popped up in 2000. Kero Blaster was the first game for which I had the idea to make this frog the main character. The cat character, who came as kind of a “set” together with the frog, has basically totally disappeared. (^ ^;”

He was also asked about the meaning behind the game’s story:

“As for event scenes, I’d like for each individual player to interpret them how exactly how the scenes make them feel.”

About Kero Blaster

You play a bipedal frog employed by the mysterious start-up company ‘Cat & Frog Inc.’. Fend off enemies seeking to stop you and overcome the challenging landscape as you head towards your destination.

When you start the game, you’ll likely be surprised by your paltry amount of life and your dodgy weapon. And when the frog runs out of life, he ‘enters hospital’ and has to restart from the beginning of the stage. But you can keep collecting and saving up money to go ‘shopping’ to increase your life and carefully select powered-up weapons to take down enemies you couldn’t defeat before.

The further you get, the stronger you can feel yourself becoming – and it feels good.

The characters appearing in between stages are the game’s other charm point. You’ll meet your co-worker, who is a cat (for some reason), your president (also a cat), and an office lady of indeterminate species.

They work like us, slog through overtime like us, whinge, get berated, and even comfort each other, just like us.
