Unfortunately, it’s a short-lived dream when, after renting a Small Craft™ edition spaceship on the cheap, you ditch unceremoniously on a planet you really, really shouldn’t be on. Cue an escape mission involving atmospheric exploration, rookie teamwork, and enough hazards to ensure your first trip into space will probably be your last.
In this stealth adventure game, you control your craft solo or in a crew of up to three players, picking your way through dark jungles, flooded chambers and mechanical environments, each thick with atmosphere. The Wii U GamePad acts as your Heads Down Display, and gives you precise control over the ship’s internal systems. Tweak the thrusters, antigravity and stabiliser, among others, in order to navigate a hostile planet, solve puzzles, and sneak past alien robots undetected. Despite being on a budget, you still deserve a robust and fail-safe spaceship, although you might want to keep an eye on those meters, as blown fuses, engine shutdowns, and the odd implosion still have a nasty habit of occurring.
Turn your living room into a starship bridge by forming a crew of three and commanding the spaceship together; one will take the role of engineer, another will play pilot. A science officer can join the fun as well, taking control of the scanner, shooting flares, and manoeuvring the ship’s searchlight. Only the player with the GamePad can see the ship’s status, so all crew members need to listen and share information, or it’ll be lights out in no time.
