Mario Kart 9 in development, will provide “new twist”

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has routinely been at the top of the Nintendo Switch’s sales rankings since its re-release in 2017, and it became the series’ best-selling title of all time.

Many people are wondering whether Nintendo will ever produce another game in the series or if it will just ride on the popularity of 8. Dr. Serkan Toto, a Tokyo-based industry expert, stated in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz that Mario Kart 9 is under “active production” at Nintendo and might be released later this year. He also said that it will have “a fresh spin” on the franchise, but did not expand.

Serkan Toto about Mario Kart 9

Although Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to sell well on the Nintendo Switch, Mario Kart 9 is now in production (with a new twist) and Nintendo might tease it this year. Nintendo has been very quiet on mobile since the release of Mario Kart Tour in 2019, but I believe we will see an established IP arrive on smart devices again in 2022.

If Toto’s reports are correct, a Mario Kart 9 unveiling for 2022 may be a welcome addition to Nintendo’s already impressive lineup.
