E3 2020 – Pitch to make event less trade show and more festival

GameDaily.biz reported of an E3 2020 planning document intended for lobbying group’s members to make the event be more like a festival.

A time for change for E3?

The document goes into detail; pitching the idea that introduces eight experience hubs to make the event less like a trade show more like Gamescom which has 5 times the attendance that E3 does.

The ESA is also trying to rebrand E3 as a “fan, media, and influencer festival” for 2020 and they are planning to introduce an app which can be used to shorten long lines similar to the Disney FastPass system.

About E3

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, commonly referred to as E3, is a premier trade-event for the video-game industry.  The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) organizes and presents E3, which many developers, publishers, hardware- and accessory-manufacturers use to introduce and advertise upcoming games and game-related merchandise to retailers and to members of the press.

E3 includes an exhibition floor for developers, publishers, and manufacturers to showcase titles and products for sale in the upcoming year. Before and during the event, publishers and hardware manufacturers usually hold press conferences to announce new games and products.

History of E3

Over time E3 has been considered the largest gaming-expo of the year. Before 2017 E3 was an industry-only event; the ESA required individuals wishing to attend to verify a professional connection to the video-game industry.

With the rise of streaming media, several of the press conferences were broadcast to the public to increase their visibility. In 2017 E3 became open to the public for the first time, with 15,000 general-admittance passes for those who wanted to attend.

Have you ever attended E3 and so what do you think of the suggestion to change the event?
