ESA – E3 to be back in 2023

The Entertainment Software Association, which organizes E3, has assured The Washington Post that E3 will return in 2023.

The biggest issue with this, as the magazine points out, is that most video game companies prefer to have their own digital showcases these days, saving money on travels to LA and allowing them to release material whenever they want rather than on a certain day and month. Geoff Keighley has mentioned today that he’s considering a physical event for Sumer Game Fest next year, so whether E3 works out next year remains to be seen.

ESA states

“We’re optimistic about returning in 2023 with both a digital and an in-person event,” said ESA president and CEO Stan Pierre-Louis in an interview with The Washington Post. “As much as we love these digital events and how they reach people and how we want that worldwide reach, we also know that there’s a very strong need for people to congregate — to be able to interact in person, see each other, and speak about what makes games great.”

“What I think is terrific about all of this testing is that businesses of all sizes are trying to find out what works best to promote the product and the information that they want to share with customers,” he added. “And I believe there is a place for a physical exhibition; I believe it is important to have digital reach.” When the two are combined, I believe there is a fundamental component of what we believe E3 can give.”
