Netflix acquired the rights to produce a new live action Pokemon series and it is being written and executive produced by Joe Henderson. You might know Joe as he is one of the team behind hit Netflix show Lucifer.
While Variety says there’s no details on plot at the moment, the company is treating it as a live-action series similar to the movie Detective Pikachu which was released back in 2019.
Variety points out that Netflix has become the home of Pokemon animation with Pokemon: Indigo League and Pokemon Journeys, among others. The live action Pokemon series is still in early development at Netflix.
Live action Pokemon series
The move to develop an original Netflix Pokemon series is not that weird as Netflix is home to multiple existing Pokemon shows, including Pokemon: Indigo League and Pokemon Journeys among others.
Netflix has been making a strong push into anime in recent years, having previously announced original series based on Far Cry, Splinter Cell, and Terminator.
The company has been moving into more live-action adaptations of anime titles as well, including Cowboy Bebop and One Piece live-action shows. and earlier released a live-action Death Note in 2017.
