Keegan-Michael Key – Toad sings in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Keegan-Michael Key has given a short interview on his portrayal of Toad in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and intriguingly, it seems that he has a song in the movie.

Becoming Toad

In an interview with Variety, Key said that Toad will demonstrate his vocal prowess. He continued by saying that he even made up a song.

Key said: “I had a ball getting to improvise a song for ‘Super Mario Bros.’ The whole event was merely for entertainment purposes.

Key commented about Toad’s voice in general and said:

“My partner and I were attempting to discover the voice via the character’s psychological journey while we worked on the voice. Then, working with the filmmakers [Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic], we added and changed a few things.

The timbre had something to it. I kept wanting it to be higher and higher. I’m pretty pleased with where we ended up because that is where we ended up.

Toad won’t be the only character with some musical action in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Recently, Bowser’s voice actor, Jack Black, said that the movie included some of his heavy metal influences. Bowser, he said, “is sort of like a heavy metal rockstar, a huge, muscular, and frightening rockstar. I also did a little rocking. You’ll probably be shocked to learn that Bowser enjoys music. I may take the movie to Broadway once it debuts.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s first teaser, which debuted last week, gave fans their first glance at Mario, Bowser, Toad, and Luigi.
