Seven months after it was initially revealed in February, the planned anime adaptation of Nier: Automata now has not one, but two new teaser videos and a release date.

Both clips, which were shown Saturday during the Aniplex Online Fest 2022 broadcast, provide viewers their first glimpses of 2B and 9S, two of the android heroes from Nier: Automata who serve in the elite military unit YoRHa and defend mankind against an extraterrestrial robot invasion.

Both of the teasers show that Yui Ishikawa and Natsuki Hanae, who portrayed 2B and 9S in the original 2017 game, respectively, will return in the anime.

Ryouji Masuyama, renowned for his work on anime like Blend S, Gurren Lagann Parallel Works, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, will be directing the series. The show will be produced by A-1 Pictures, the company behind such anime as Sword Art Online, Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, and Lycoris Recoil.

Nier: Automata director Yoko Taro said that the anime version of the game, dubbed Nier: Automata Ver. 1.1a, will differ significantly from the game’s original plot in a chat with Masuyama. In a behind-the-scenes video, Taro explained why the anime’s title includes the suffix “Ver 1.1a”: “Nier: Automata was a tale we made to be a game, so reproducing it as is wouldn’t make an intriguing plot for an anime.” I suggested that things be switched around.

The sci-fi action-RPG Nier: Automata from Square Enix and PlatinumGames, which debuted in 2017, captured the attention of players all around the globe with its fast-paced fighting system, branching philosophical plotline, and several fourth wall-breaking storyline and gameplay surprises.
