About Project Piplup

Project Piplup has been established by the Pokemon Company to honor Sinnoh’s popular starting Pokemon, potentially in preparation for the release of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl later this year.

It’s not just Pokemon’s 25th birthday in 2021, but it’s also the 15th anniversary of the fan-favorite 4th generation games, Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, making the news of their remakes all the more intriguing. Players will be able to return to the Sinnoh region in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl on the Switch later this year, where they will be able to pick from three beginning Pokemon: Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup. Pokemon has introduced Project Piplup for a limited period to coincide with the celebration of the Sinnoh region with both the remakes and Pokemon Legends: Arceus arriving to the Switch.

Project Piplup is a throwback to Pokemon’s last year-long celebration, Project Eevee, which took place in 2018. A lot of lovely promotional films were published at the time to emphasize the in-person events taking place in Japan, but The Pokemon Company also issued a slew of souvenirs, including Eevee plush hoodies and sleeping Eevee and Eeveelution dolls. Of course, this was before the release of Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, and Project Eevee contributed to the games’ enthusiasm.
