Rune Factory 6 planned for the future

Shiro Maekawa, the main director of Rune Factory, has made some comments on what players may anticipate from the next game in the Rune Factory series, and he has also confirmed that Rune Factory 6 will be published at some point in the future.

Fans who watched the most recent Nintendo Direct broadcast in September were treated to two news about the series. In addition to Rune Factory 3 Special, we will also be receiving a whole new game in its entirety. On the other hand, specifics on the latter title have not yet been presented.

Rune Factory 6 is coming in the future, that is for sure

During an interview with 4Gamer, Maekawa dropped a hint that the forthcoming project would be “a whole new departure for the series,” and that the development team is currently investigating a wide variety of concepts. It seems as if the team would want to switch things up a little bit, and the new game will be the one to show the way on that front. Despite the fact that it is not Rune Factory 6, Maekawa has assured us that we will be able to experience it at some time in the not too distant future.

We would appreciate it if you could discuss the creation of the new series with us. Rune Factory 5, the following installment in the numbered series, was revealed at the same time as Rune Factory 4 Special, which was the next installment in the series. What type of video game are you currently developing, if I may ask?

As we said in the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation, our work on this project has literally just started. As a result of this, we are unable to discuss too much about the actual contents of the game. However, I can state that it is not a numbered game, but rather a brand new departure for the series, and that we are now contemplating a wide variety of concepts for it.

A lot of people responded on social media by asking, “Is Rune Factory 6 coming?! “, but you do realize that it’s not that, right?

Nope, that’s not the case. In the past, we’ve had games such as Rune Factory Frontiers and Rune Factory Oceans, neither of which are numbered titles but yet have a sense of connection to the primary series.

Why are you now developing a game that is not a part of the numbered series? Even if it’s not technically a “spin-off,” it’s still confusing.

The idea that “It’s about time we need to make some significant leaps ahead in the series” is floating about in people’s heads. We have made passing mention of it in the past, but with the third installment, the Rune Factory truly honed down on perfecting their formula. In point of fact, ever since then, games have often used Rune Factory 3 as a foundation. However, in order to provide gamers with a fresh experience in the subsequent numbered games, we can’t just continue using it as our starting point.

It has been 13 years since the release of Rune Factory 3, and, including that game, there have been 3 more since then. When seen in this light, it seems unlikely that one could produce anything novel by just carrying on in the same manner.

Exactly! To answer your question, yes, we do want to create Rune Factory 6 in the future; but, in order for that to occur, we will need to reevaluate the games that have been released up to this point and assess what significant adjustments need to be made. Having said that, if we decided to entirely alter the numbered series, it is possible that everyone would get a little bit perplexed. At some point in the future, we will be required to take on that new obstacle; nevertheless, for the time being, we are now working on an unnumbered title.

I am aware that you have just very recently begun working on the game; nonetheless, at this point, are you able to provide any information about the game’s mechanics or the new world?

At this moment, we are really at a position where we can say, “Let’s go with this type of emotion,” which means that there is really very little to speak about. Simply put, we are going to make sure that the “adventure,” “life,” and “love” themes that run throughout the Rune Factory series are preserved. Without modifying them, we are creating something completely own!

The release of Rune Factory 3 on Nintendo Switch will take place on March 2, 2023 in Japan, and in the spring of the following year in western regions.
