SEGA – Genesis Mini 2 severely supply limited in the West

Due to the global shortage of semiconductors, SEGA has told the technology magazine Ars Technica that the SEGA Mega Drive Mini 2 will only be made in small numbers for the west.

If you live in North America and want to get one of the devices later this year, you should know that you can only order it through Amazon.com and that it will be shipped from Japan, which could cause problems with customs. The Mega Drive Mini 2 hasn’t been announced for Europe at all, probably because there aren’t enough of them.

Shortage of the SEGA Mega Drive Mini 2

If it does come here, it might be in February 2023. This is a huge setback compared to the first SEGA Mega Drive Mini, which could be pre-ordered from all stores when it came out and soon after. The SEGA Mega Drive Mini 2 has games that the first one didn’t have, as well as games for the SEGA Mega CD. The first mini console was great, so it looks like you will have to pre-order if you want one.

“When I asked Sega of Japan’s corporate office about the Genesis Mini 2 shipments, they told me that the new miniaturized console was a “Japan-only project” for the company. “Because of the global shortage of semiconductors, the Sega Genesis Mini 2 could only be made in small numbers,” says a letter from the Sega president’s office.

The company decided to make a small batch of Genesis Mini 2s for the West along with its order of Mega Drive Mini 2s. The letter says, “The number of units for this project is about one-tenth of the number for the last Genesis Mini.”

So if you want one, be quick.
