So Sony is buying Bungie for $3.6 billion

We are a bit late with this one but yeah Bungie is being bought by Sony for $3.6 billion.

Previously, the studio was responsible for making the Halo series a household brand and solidifying Xbox’s position in the console industry. The company has functioned independently since finishing Halo Reach’s development, most notably working on the Destiny series. This announcement comes only two weeks after Microsoft revealed its intention to buy Activision Blizzard for approximately $70 billion.

Acquiring Bungie for 3.6 billion dollars

The transaction will cost Sony $3.6 billion, according to a BusinessWire news statement, and Bungie will become an autonomous subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).

The deal’s immediate consequences are yet unknown. Bungie is one of the most successful game companies in the market, and its blockbuster hit Destiny series has propelled them to the forefront of live-service game production. Bungie, on the other hand, will remain self-sufficient, “maintaining the freedom to self-publish and reach gamers wherever they want to play.” Destiny and other Bungie products will continue to surface on other platforms, according to a blog post on Bungie.Net. Here’s an example of what I mean:

Q. If Bungie has further games in development, will they now be exclusive to PlayStation?

No. We want the worlds we’re developing to be accessible to everybody who enjoys video games. We’ll keep being self-published and artistically autonomous, and we’ll keep driving a single, cohesive Bungie community.

Bungie’s ambitions for the future include growing Destiny 2 and the series as a whole, as well as developing a new IP.

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida stated the following about the Bungie acquisition:

Bungie has produced and continues to evolve some of the world’s most popular videogame titles, bringing together millions of people across the globe by connecting its principles with people’s desire to share gaming experiences.

We will use the Sony Group’s vast variety of entertainment and technological assets to support Bungie’s continued development and capacity to build iconic worlds across numerous platforms and media, as part of our Purpose to ‘fill the world with emotion, via the power of creativity and technology.’

The purchase of Bungie by Sony is part of a growing and perhaps alarming trend in the games industry toward concentration.
