Sonic Frontiers: The Music of Starfall Islands

Sonic Frontiers: The Music of Starfall Islands will be created by SEGA and composer Tomoya Ohtani, according to a statement released by independent record company Data Discs.

Pre-orders for the album, which will be available as a 2xLP or 4xLP, started on Saturday, October 22. On November 8, Sonic Frontiers will be available on the Nintendo Switch and other devices.

The Music of Starfall Islands

The Music of Starfall Islands, a collection of lovely instrumental and classical-inspired compositions utilized as the background music for the different islands in Sonic Frontiers, was created in collaboration with SEGA of Japan and composer Tomoya Ohtani. Each island’s music is presented as a suite, with many parts that build on one another and culminate in a climax. Each movement has a unique tone and feel, much like the islands themselves, which span from lush meadows to dry deserts, volcanoes, and beyond. Tomoya Ohtani is the lone composer of the music, and it often has a spare, melancholy, and surprisingly experimental feel to it (including Iranian percussion, Celtic vocal samples and Armenian folk instruments). Other times, with the inclusion of subtle electronics and the opulent strings of The Nashville Scoring Orchestra, it is often rhythmic and expressive.

We are happy to be able to offer this selection of lovely and unusual tunes on its own, even if this release is by no means the whole Sonic Frontiers soundtrack. This soundtrack is unlike any Sonic soundtrack that has gone before, with its melancholy tone and novel creative techniques. It may probably confound the expectations of some ardent fans, but it should also surprise and thrill both new and old listeners.

I sought to create an environment for each song that, despite the melancholy it brings, yet has a glimmer of optimism, as Tomoya Ohtani says in his liner notes for this album. The tunes in Sonic Frontiers concentrate as much on the mood as any other Sonic game music I’ve heard, in my opinion.

There are two versions of The Music of Starfall Islands: a 4xLP box set (this) that contains every variant or movement of each island’s theme, or a 2xLP edition that just includes the key songs and provides a more condensed listening experience (here). After the game has been released, the complete track list for each version will be made public.
