Some may have been spoiled by the release of some official posters late yesterday night, but the teaser gives a first glimpse at Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Princess Peach.

An official trailer

Even with a second trailer, it’s still difficult to believe that this is real: Nintendo collaborated with Illumination to create a full-fledged animated Super Mario Bros. film. While the previous video concentrated on the franchise’s antagonist, Bowser, this one focuses on the lovely Italian plumbers, Mario and Luigi, and the many, many games they lead.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be released on April 7, 2023, and yes, Chris Pratt will continue to voice Mario. We hear more of his problematic accent here, as well as more from his brother Luigi (Charlie Day), the rest of the cast, and several references to Mario games such as Donkey Kong, Smash Bros., and, yes, even Mario Kart.

Apart from Pratt and Day, Anya Taylor-Joy plays Peach, Jack Black plays Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key plays Toad, Seth Rogen plays Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen plays Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson plays Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco plays Spike.

Aside from their voices, the trailer clearly shows how stunning and bright the film’s animation is. Visually, the teams are treating this picture like the mega-franchise that it is.

We’re still not certain that the movie will live up to the expectations of a brand that has existed in some form or another for over 50 years. But if it is, and the film is a success, the imagination runs with ideas for future films that Nintendo could finally feel comfortable making. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not just the beginning of a prospective Mario series, but also the beginning of a Nintendo Cinematic Universe.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be released in cinemas on April 7.
