114 million Nintendo Switch systems since 2017

Nintendo has released its quarterly financial report and said that the Nintendo Switch family of systems has sold 114,33 million units around the world since it came out in 2017. The information given is up to September 30, 2022, so it’s clear that more will have been sold since then. Over 75.94 million Nintendo 3DS units have been sold around the world (sales figures not updated).

Nintendo sales and expectations

The console has shipped 3.25 million units around the world during the quarter. In the same time frame, Sony shipped 3.3 million PS5 units. It’s interesting to see that PlayStation’s sales for the first quarter in a long time were almost the same as Nintendo’s. This is a 15% drop from the same time last year, which is mostly due to a lack of semiconductors. However, Nintendo said that sales to customers stayed about the same, at about 3.3 million units.

When looking at the raw financial results for the first half of the year (Japanese companies usually look at cumulative quarterly results instead of quarter by quarter), net sales actually went up by 5.2% year-on-year, while operating profit was almost flat at +0.2% year-on-year.

Nintendo’s plans have also changed. It now thinks it will only sell 19 million Nintendo Switch units during its full fiscal year, which ends on March 31. Before, it thought it would sell 21 million.
