About A Highland Song

The Plot

Moira McKinnon has never been near a body of water.

She’d been living with her mother in a modest home on the outskirts of the Scottish Highlands for fifteen years when she gets a letter from her Uncle Hamish encouraging her to visit the seaside. A fantastic gift awaits her if she can reach his lighthouse in time for the solstice…

Moira flees as a result.

The Universe

Every mountain in the Highlands has a tale to tell, and every valley resonates with music. Giants slumber, ghosts sing, birds deliver messages, and eagles take the dead to the afterlife.

But the Highlands’ crags are harsh, and the tops are frigid—journey Moira’s will be difficult.

Can you assist her in navigating this tortuous wilderness in a timely manner?

The Situation

A Highland Song is a narrative adventure game by inkle, the studio behind 80 Days, Heaven’s Vault, and the unexpected smash Overboard from last year.

Explore hills crisscrossed with paths—some well-worn, others off the beaten path—that are full of tales, lost items, echoes, and memories.

Climb summits to get perspective and plan your next move. Then, in sync with the music, hop, slide, and leap across the troughs.

And be prepared to return many times, since a single trip will not enough to uncover the Highlands’ innermost mysteries.

With a combination of hand-drawn animation, impressionistic painted landscapes, and dynamic lighting/weather effects, this 2.5D side-scrolling adventure brings the Highlands to life.

The Soundtrack

Laurence Chapman composed the game’s soundtrack, which is performed by two multi-award-winning giants of the Scottish folk scene, Talisk and Fourth Moon. These two bands, festival royalty, blend brilliant instrumental playing with quick, imaginative rhythms to create new melodies in old forms that are performed with beauty, intensity, and swagger.
