A new trailer for Backbone on Nintendo Switch was released by publisher Raw Fury and developer EggNut.  You aren’t one of a kind. You aren’t a hero by any stretch of the imagination. You’ve been thrust into bad circumstances, and you have no choice but to solve what may be your most difficult case yet.

There is no other option. We evolve, but we don’t evolve. Detective, go to work.

About Backbone

Backbone is a post-noir adventure film. Explore a dystopian Vancouver populated by animals as you take on the role of raccoon private detective Howard Lotor and learn a profoundly personal narrative of growth and development.

Backbone is influenced by film noir, bizarre science fiction, post-soviet aesthetics, current political regimes, Lynch and Kaufman’s work, and Sartre’s existential philosophy. It’s a visual, linear story that defies genre and challenges your understanding of what it means to be human.

GAMEPLAY

Backbone’s gameplay is centered on storyline and emotional expression, with deep and detailed conversations reminiscent of classic CRPGs, as well as exploration of the gorgeous locations. Everything must come to an end at some point, but you get to choose which version of Howard Lotor gets there first.

As Howard, you’ll:

  • Make meaningful connections with a diverse cast of characters in search of the truth
  • Shape and express your identity through dialogue choices – choose what kind of person you want to be
  • Explore and experience both downtrodden and flourishing districts of a strange, yet familiar version of Vancouver •
  • Come to terms with the universal pain of existence and loss
  • Play as a raccoon

FEATURES

  • Post-apocalyptic dystopia
    • Backbone’s Vancouver is a perilous place, harsh and desolate, but not completely devoid of hope. It’s a story about a cold and uncaring world, with real relationships and a damaged but unwavering desire to make a difference thrown in for good measure. Everyone wants to make the world a better place, but this isn’t always the case.
  • Visuals are breathtaking.
    • The vast City comes to life thanks to a stunning blend of high-resolution pixel graphics and 3D elements including dynamic lighting, pouring rain, volumetric fog, and neon lights. Visit Gastown, Granville, and the Fairmont Hotel, all of which have been reinvented in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals.
  • A memorable and evocative soundtrack
    • Danshin and Arooj Aftab’s original doom jazz soundtrack contains an unusual blend of traditional jazz and electronic music. The soundtrack for Backbone has been skillfully constructed to produce a dramatic, atmospheric, and simply jaw-dropping atmosphere that supports and enriches the tale.

Backbone is available digitally via the Nintendo Switch eShop. There are language choices in English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and Portuguese.
