Bravely Default producer – Remaster teased

Square Enix recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Bravely Default series with a number of different events. One of these occasions was a livestream when the game’s producer, Tomoya Asano, spoke about the possible future of the series, including the chance for a remaster of the original installment.

During the livestream, a high quality version of the opening video from the original game was shown, which prompted Asano to speculate on the following: “Our crew has become bigger and more capable over the last ten years. Announcing a remaster of Bravely Default: Flying Fairy would be the nicest thing that could happen and something that fans would want, especially after seeing the game’s opening film. However, I’m sadly unable to make any such announcements at this time. Let’s simply say, “‘For now,'”

Remasters possible

However, he did mention that a remaster of the first two 3DS games could be challenging since they had AR and Streetpass features that more recent platforms can’t faithfully reproduce. This therefore implies that a remaster of such games would need a little more effort than a relatively straightforward upgraded port. Additionally, he used the occasion to address the audience, asking fans to choose between a Bravely Third (likely a straight sequel to Bravely Second) and a Bravely Default 3, which would be similar to Bravely Default II.

Notably, Asano spoke on the series’ future in a remark from last year, saying: “Bravely Default II was well-received by fans and as a result, we’re hoping to continue the series since we believe we can pull it off once again. However, given that we’re still in the planning stages and that I anticipate development to take another 3–4 years, we would appreciate it if fans would be patient. Therefore, whatever the series has in store for the future is probably still many years away.

The head of a sizable team at Square Enix, Team Asano, has produced a number of games for Nintendo platforms over the years, including Triangle Strategy, the Octopath Traveler series, and the Bravely Default games. Their upcoming game, Octopath Traveler II, is scheduled to launch on Switch on February 24, 2023. It is logical to presume that the next installment in the Bravely Default series will be released on Nintendo systems given their tight connection.
