Diablo II: Resurrected server issues explained by Blizzard

Diablo II took the world by storm roughly 20 years ago but it was only a few weeks ago when Blizzard launched the remaster and expansion of the game, Diablo II: Resurrected.

Although the game itself well-received, earning an 80/100 on Metacritic, fans have been frustrated with the overwhelming amount of server issues that have been riddled in regard to the online experience.

Adam Fletcher, Community Manager at Blizzard Entertainment, has since released a forum post explaining why the problems are happening, and the active plans as the studio to fix them.

Server issues in detail

The post itself provides an extremely detailed, technical, and transparent explanation as to what exactly is going on. There isn’t a single reasoning or cause behind the issues, but the meat and potatoes of it all is that an unexpectedly high amount of player traffic post-launch has caused multiple server overloads.

This not only has caused a multitude of outages, but unfortunately also means that some player’s character data was lost in the regional-to-global database transfer. Diablo II: Resurrected uses a lot of the same legacy code as the original game from 2001, and while optimized for modern day, one of the legacy services can’t keep up with the underestimated amount of game server creations.

Blizzard is hard at work in providing updates to drastically improve users’ online experience by adding features such as rate limiting and login queue creation for a more immediate solution. In the long run, plans are underway to break down “critical pieces of functionality” into their own separate services to help with server load and allow Blizzard to “look into scaling up [their] game management service.”
