The reveal of King K. Rool as a new playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was arguably the most surprising thing that came out of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct.
However, there are now some regrets surfacing regarding the character’s “slightly rubbish name.” Donkey Kong Country designer Gregg Mayles of Rare had the following to say about the permanent label attached to the menacing antagonist on Twitter;
Never expected old K.Rool to make it out of DKC, let alone turn up in#SmashBros nearly 25 years later. Maybe I should have spent a bit more than 5 minutes coming up with his slightly rubbish name. https://t.co/X5PZpR54c2

Naming the Donkey Nemesis
Really? We never disliked his name at all. What would have called him otherwise?
Well we do not have to speculate, Gregg actually showed us;
Never expected this tweet https://t.co/3IpVWMAcDU about #KingKRool in #SmashBros to be so popular. As a moderately interesting bonus follow up, an early naming sheet shows K. Rool was going to be 'Kommander' and #DKC was going to be called 'Monkey Mayhem' pic.twitter.com/SvwnOxXN2S

Well, we prefer the King over the Kommander, that sounds so german and that just does not seem to fit. Although it could have made for some fun jokes for sure. And knowing Rare that just might have happened. Herr Kommander K. Rool is ok but King K Rool when said a bit fast is just King Cruel and we love that.
