Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Series rated by ESRB

It would seem that several classic and restored Final Fantasy adventures will be receiving a new release on the Nintendo Switch in the not too distant future!

The ESRB has updated its listings for the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, which is a collection of six games that remaster Final Fantasy 1 – 6 with universally updated 2D pixel graphics and a rearranged soundtrack. These games were only available for release for personal computers and mobile devices between July 2021 and February 2022. The ESRB ratings for these six titles were originally exclusively available for the Windows PC platform; however, the ratings for these games now feature the Nintendo Switch and the PS4 as additional platforms.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Series games ratings

FINAL FANTASY

The players take on the role of adventurers setting out on a quest to unearth mystical gems in this role-playing game. Players control little characters as they navigate 2D environments, engaging in exploration and combat with a variety of foes along the way. Players choose their attacks and spells from a menu in order to engage in turn-based combat against other players and characters (e.g., small monsters, zombies, pirates). When an enemy is vanquished, they flash and disappear.

Some female animals have bodies or clothing that expose a reasonable amount of cleavage, while others have cleavage that is completely exposed (e.g., bikini-style tops).

FINAL FANTASY II

This is a role-playing game played in two dimensions in which players assist rebels in their quest to preserve the planet. As they travel through a fantasy country, players may participate in turn-based battle against fanciful monsters and converse with the many personalities they encounter along the way (e.g., golems, zombies, goblins). Players go via a menu screen to pick their various weapon assaults and spells, and vanquished foes often disintegrate or vanish. Bacchus’ Wine is the name of an item that may be used by players in the midst of battle to improve their powers. There is one depiction of a female snake-like monster that has a breast that is just half covered and lacks any discernable detail. The terms “hell” and “damn” are used several times during the game.

FINAL FANTASY III

This is a role-playing game played in two dimensions, in which players take control of characters who are attempting to prevent the annihilation of the planet. Players face off against a wide variety of fascinating foes in turn-based skirmishes (during which they choose their attacks, spells, and skills from a menu) (e.g., goblins, demons, dragons). The language and dialogue in the cutscenes include depictions of violent acts (e.g., “attacked with a knife”; “turned the knife on himself”). Some of the foes are seen to have swords that are covered in blood. A female monster that is shown in the game as well as in an art museum gives the impression that she is topless; nevertheless, there are no specifics that can be made out. A figure who is inebriated makes an appearance at a bar (for example, “Nothin’ left to do except drink away my concerns… *hic*”).

FINAL FANTASY IV

This is a role-playing game played in two dimensions, in which players take control of adventurers on a quest to thwart an ancient evil. Players explore a fantastical environment, engage in conversation with its inhabitants, and fight in turn-based encounters against hostile human and non-human entities (e.g., plant monsters, robots, zombies). When carrying out assaults, players pick moves and spells from a menu screen to use with their weapons and magic. In addition, players get access to an art gallery that features a number of character paintings, one of which is a picture of a door that is bleeding. In one of the line drawings, there is a depiction of a little female creature that seems to be topless; nevertheless, there are no features that can be made out. A small number of the people and monsters in the story wear exposing clothing (e.g., deep cleavage). The players have the opportunity to come across a drunk individual at a bar at one point who will tell them, “Booger off! *hiccup* I ain’s terrified of you.” In the game, the term “bastard” makes an appearance.

FINAL FANTASY V

This is a role-playing game played in two dimensions, in which players take control of adventurers on a mission to thwart an evil entity. While venturing through a fanciful realm, players participate in turn-based battle against fantastical foes and have conversations with a cast of memorable characters (e.g., wizards, dragons, zombies). The players go through a menu screen to pick magical spells and/or weapon strikes; after an enemy is vanquished, it often dissipates or disappears. One of the boss characters is shown as having her breasts half exposed, with just tiny pieces of fabric concealing them.

FINAL FANTASY VI

The players take on the character of a villain in this role-playing game, and their mission is to stop them from destroying the planet. The players participate in turn-based fights (for example, picking strikes or spells from a menu screen) against a variety of foes (for example, bears, mech-robots, knights), all of which vanish after they have been vanquished. There are also violent acts shown in cutscenes, such as a character who is incarcerated receiving a punch or another character who is stabbed. A few of the characters are shown wearing clothing that provide a clear view of their ample cleavage, while the line drawings in the gallery show figures that are only partly clothed.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series has not yet been officially confirmed for release on Nintendo Switch by Square Enix; nevertheless, these upgraded ESRB ratings look to be an encouraging indicator that we may hear more news in the future.
