Fire Emblem Warriors 2 considered before Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes development

It has been discovered that Nintendo and Koei Tecmo contemplated developing Fire Emblem Warriors 2 before deciding on Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

That tidbit of knowledge comes from a Nintendo Dream interview with development producer Hideo Suzuki, producer Yosuke Hayashi, and director Hayato Iwata. Hayashi said that the team “intended to produce a sequel to Fire Emblem Warriors” and “used the placeholder name Fire Emblem Warriors 2 and considered many routes we might take it in.”

Nintendo Dream translation

Hayashi: We originally collaborated with Nintendo and Intelligent Systems on the first Fire Emblem Warriors. During the development process, it was suggested that we may potentially undertake the next main series Fire Emblem game, Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Fire Emblem: Three Houses development began shortly after Fire Emblem Warriors concluded.

We decided to produce a sequel to Fire Emblem Warriors after our three firms had worked together for so long and had learned to grasp each other’s ways of thinking.

We initially called it Fire Emblem Warriors 2 as a placeholder name and discussed various directions we could take it in, and we decided to make a Warriors title in the world of Three Houses with the current staff involved because of its positive reception and because the setting that our companies collaborated on was one of its strengths. That’s what Suzuki, Iwata, and I determined the audience would like. So we began with Fire Emblem Warriors 2 and worked our way up to Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

Suzuki: It became the phantom proposition (laughs). The direction may have changed, but as fans of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, we were overjoyed to be able to build a Warriors title in that environment.

Iwata also said that there was talk about “potentially bringing characters from previous titles.” As the project proceeded, it was determined to “concentrate on only Three Houses and build a tale that might have realistically occurred in that universe.”

If Fire Emblem Warriors 2 had been released, it would have been more of a celebration title, similar to the first, with numerous games included. Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Gaiden, The Blazing Blade, Awakening, and Fates were all represented by Fire Emblem Warriors.

This all just leaves the question how far a long would Fire Emblem Warriors 2 be?
