Firmware 6.0 leaked

Firmware 6.0 leaked

Once in a while Nintendo releases a major firmware update. The step from 5.1.0 to 6.0 now seems to be imminent. There were rumors for a release on September 3 but that was not forthcoming.

Leaked

A group of hackers has found several hints to this firmware somewhere on Nintendo’s servers (CDN). Although they have not yet succeeded in installing it, they have found some interesting things.

Nintendo Online Service

Of course, the Nintendo Online Service is central to this update. Although we still know very little about this service, its release is getting closer. The service must be available before the end of this month.

Cloudsaves

One of the functions that at least belongs to this online service is making a cloud backup of your save games. This allows you to continue playing where you left off even after your Nintendo Switch has broken.

However, this is nothing new for people who have hacked the Nintendo Switch. They already have the necessary tools for making backups of their savegames or for restoring them.

Controllers

That was not all that was found in this firmware. The hackers also found bits of code that seem to refer to new controllers. The 6.0 update contains icons that refer to the NES, SNES, Famicom and Super Famicom controllers.

Something that suggests that Nintendo is considering releasing these controllers for the Virtual Console games that are part of the renewed online subscription. Incidentally, this does not immediately mean that there are concrete plans, only that Nintendo has thought about it. They can also be remnants in the code.

But it raises the question of whether there are specific slide on controls outside the normal Joy cons for games from other systems. Personally, we actually see that

Release 6.0 firmware

When the 6.0 firmware update will be released is not yet announced by Nintendo. Because it seems necessary before the Nintendo Switch Online Service is introduced, we expect it to be released this month.
