About Gerda: A Flame in Winter

Gerda: A Flame in Winter was unveiled for the Nintendo Switch during last year’s Indie World Showcase. It was originally scheduled to debut in 2022.

The Danish community of Tinglev is occupied by the Germans during World War II in this moving narrative game based on true events. Players will follow Gerda Larsen, a regular lady in extraordinary circumstances compelled to take a stand when her life is turned upside down.

Gerda arrives home from the clinic where she works as a nurse one day. As she enters the home, she observes blood and soon learns that her husband, Anders, is being held by the Gestapo. He has left key resistance materials behind, and it seems that her future acts may determine the fate of countless Danish and German lives.

A story recounted not on the front lines, but in the intimate setting of Gerda’s little Danish hamlet, where she has spent her whole life.

Her understanding of her town and village gives her an advantage as a citizen, since she is only armed with her intellect, compassion, and awareness. Gerda’s personality qualities are her abilities, and her interactions with others will influence how the tale develops. Exploration and conversation, as well as resource and relationship management, are used to make decisions. Every day, she writes in her journal about her experiences and activities, which players will use to build components of her personality that will enable Gerda to cope with circumstances in various ways.

Throughout the game, she will encounter a diverse range of individuals, including her fellow villagers — both Danes and ethnic Germans — as well as members of the Resistance and the invading Nazis. In times of turbulence and conflict, every encounter is significant, and every choice is crucial. With lives on the line, your values and beliefs will be tested… How far would you go to defend those you care about?

PortaPlay director of development Hans von Knut Skovfoged had this to say about Gerda: A Flame in Winter’s release date:

“This game is significant to us since it is based on genuine World War II tales, especially those of my grandmother.” We believe that by working with Gerda, we may provide a realistic picture of some of the challenges of occupied populations at the time, as well as emphasize the fact that some individuals were forced to make tough decisions that challenged absolute judgment. We think that through playing this narrative game, we may inspire others to share their tales. We know that many civilian experiences go unrecorded in wars and occupations across the world, many of which are still ongoing. And we’re delighted to be able to convey at least one such narrative, Gerda: A Flame in Winter.”

Gerda: A Flame in Winter will be available digitally on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
