Hello Games – No Man’s Sky was in the works for 2 years

During the last Nintendo Direct, a number of new titles for the Nintendo Switch were unveiled, including No Man’s Sky. What you may be shocked to learn is that it was a major passion project for Hello Games to accomplish it.

Hello Games managing director Sean Murray said in a blog post that the firm has been working on the Switch version for “a couple of years.” “On the following day, someone stride in with a new technological solution,” the team said, “only to have someone stride in with a unique technical solution the next day.” “We’re taking the effort to make this seem totally at home on the tablet, both on the large screen and, more crucially, as a portable version of No Man’s Sky,” says Hello Games.

I can’t express how amazing it is to play No Man’s Sky on such a little portable device. It feels both entirely normal and incredibly unbelievable at the same moment.

A few members of our tiny team have been quietly working on the Nintendo Switch version of No Man’s Sky for the last several years. It was really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. No Man’s Sky is based on procedural generation, which means that everything you see is generated by the console. This makes porting our game to a console like the Switch much more difficult. So many times, we’ve gone home one day thinking it was impossible, just to have someone walk in the following day with a one-of-a-kind technological answer. To be honest, I believe this staff is happiest when they are doing near-impossible tasks.

We’re taking the effort to make this seem totally at home on the device, both on the large screen and, more significantly, as a portable version of No Man’s Sky, from the UI to the controllers to the gameplay. I have to pinch myself every time I pick up the Switch and hop from planet to planet, star system to star system, that I am playing on the Nintendo Switch and that I can carry it with me everywhere I go. There’s still a lot more to learn about the Switch version, and we’ll be making additional announcements as the release date approaches.

The Nintendo Switch version is “only one of many exciting advancements we have in store for the community in 2022,” according to the blog post, adding that “we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on in the VERY near future.”

In the summer of 2022, No Man’s Sky will be released for Nintendo Switch.
