About LUCID

LUCID is a fantasy world where a heartfelt adventure takes place. Explore a huge overworld, solve difficult puzzles in dungeons, and win fights on the edge of your seat to get powerful new abilities and find more secrets in places you’ve already been. LUCID is a tight, perfect platformer. It has the flow-state fun of genre giants like Celeste and is a love letter to the golden age of 2D games like Mega Man X, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid.

Explore Aedyn, a mysterious place full of crystals, after the end of the world in the Great Fall. The Lucid Giant has fallen, and now the corruption that is spreading across the land can only be stopped by the few remaining Sentinels, who are experts in the Crystal Arts. Join the fight as Oenn, a young Junior Sentinel with skin like stone. Find the pieces of the Lucid Giant that have broken off and face the ancient celestial being that is threatening Aedyn.

The five Crystal Arts give Oenn more ways to move and fight. He gets them as rewards for going through memorable dungeons like the icy climb of Onyx Ridge or the toxic darkness of Welltown. Even though Oenn can jump, dash, and pulse on his own, he can use the Crystal Arts to cross impossible gaps and use devastating combo attacks that he couldn’t do on his own. Use Crystal Pulse to weaken enemy armor from afar, then smash their defenses with an overhead Crystal Axe slam. Fire the Crystal Spear to open a path above, or use its “down air” to help Oenn jump higher.

Lay bare the secrets of Aedyn by using up to two Crystal Arts at once and switching between them during a combo. Solve tricky puzzles deep underground, beat tough bosses, and explore the overworld to help villagers and learn about Aedyn’s past. On Oenn’s journey, every item has a description that adds to the world’s history. Translating runic language or defeating enough of the same enemy will reveal a bigger story.

The Matte Black Studio’s founder, Eric Manahan, said about the announcement

With LUCID, I’m committed to letting players tell as much of the story as they want, in exactly the way they want. LUCID wants you to write your own legend in a broken world of platforming bliss, from the story threads you choose to follow to the Crystal Arts and movement tech you use most.

“Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Cosmo’s Cosmic Canyon, Bio Menace, and Monster Bash were some of Apogee’s first big platform games,” said Scott Miller, the company’s original founder. “It makes perfect sense for us to get back into platformers, and with LUCID we finally found one that is new, has a deep story, and has a super fun main character with a lot of tricks up his jacket sleeve.”
