More insights to Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon

Hideki Kamiya, the supervising director of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, has sent out a statement on the upcoming video game. At the beginning of this month, Nintendo and PlatinumGames made the announcement on the collaboration at The Game Awards.

Kamiya made the observation that the game “is something extremely fresh for PlatinumGames, produced by a team of young ambitious devs with only a few veteran to aid along the way.” While Tomoko Nishii is in charge of the art direction, Abebe Tinari is serving as the director.

Another important aspect of Kamiya’s message is when he mentioned that Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon was developed “with the hope that fans of the series to date will enjoy this unique take on their favorite badass heroine, and also endeavor to deliver an unforgettable experience to players who may not be comfortable with action games… or even players who are unfamiliar with the Bayonetta series in the first place!” This is a particularly interesting aspect of Kamiya’s message because it indicates

Hideki Kamiya about Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon

My name is Hideki Kamiya, and I am the Chief Game Designer at PlatinumGames as well as the Supervising Director of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. I would want to use this opportunity to introduce myself to everyone. What a hefty helping of information! Simply put, I am the supervising director of the Bayonetta series. In my role, I am primarily responsible for managing the lore of the games and writing the scenarios for them, among other things.

I cannot express how thrilled I am that Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon has been revealed to the public at long last! Given that Bayonetta 3 had just recently been released, I believe that many of our fans were taken aback by this unexpected revelation. Bayonetta 3 was, in a sense, fresh off the press. Keeping this in mind, I am certain that each and every one of you has picked up on the fact that the title’s name contains the term “Bayonetta.” And many of you must be astonished to see Bayonetta departing from her usual fair of gun-toting in order to enter a bizarre illusionary realm that seems to be taken directly from a storybook!

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is something extremely fresh for PlatinumGames. It was developed by a group of young and ambitious game developers, with just a few industry veterans to support them along the way. As this project’s initial Director, Abebe Tinari is at the helm, while Tomoko Nishii, in her role as Art Director, is responsible for bringing the game’s distinctive aesthetic to life.

Cereza, a young woman in the midst of her apprenticeship as a witch, serves as the story’s main protagonist in Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. Yes, you’re accurate. It’s definitely THAT Cereza. Owned and operated by us, Bayonetta (albeit in her childhood years).

I have a hunch that the word “Bayonetta” in the game’s title may strike fear into the hearts of some of you out there. This could be because you aren’t particularly skilled at hard-core action games, or it could be that you aren’t familiar with the Bayonetta lore because you haven’t played any of the games in the Bayonetta series up until this point. Do not be concerned! The gameplay in this game is very unique and unlike anything else that has been included in a Bayonetta game up to this point. We made Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon in the hopes that fans of the series up to this point will appreciate this fresh take on their favorite badass heroine, and we also made it our mission to provide an unforgettable experience to players who may not be used to playing action games… or even players who have never played a game in the Bayonetta series before!

I beseech you to relax your guard and approach this game with a clean slate and an open mind as you plunge into an adventure that takes place in the depths of a mysterious forest. You will be in charge of the strange and wonderful duo consisting of a young witch who is somewhat hesitant and inexperienced and a stray demon who is rough and tumble. I implore you to do this.

You did read that sentence correctly! This game has one additional character that may be considered the protagonist. His name is Cheshire, and he is a demon that has made his way into the realm of humans. In a wilderness that is fraught with danger, the sheer force of this monster is very necessary for your survival. In order for players to advance in the game, they will need to combine the magical talents of Cereza with the savage strength of Cheshire. I’m certain that you’re going to have a great time digging your claws into the action since the way you handle these two is a genuinely one-of-a-kind experience.

The narrative focuses on the process of two young, impressionable characters maturing and coming to terms with who they are. You have the opportunity to relive your youth with Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. As you flip the pages of this charming picture book, you may see firsthand where Cereza and Cheshire’s journey leads them.

Abebe Tinari about Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon

I’d like to introduce myself; my name is Abebe Tinari. The video game Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon was directed by yours truly. After keeping it a secret for such a significant amount of time, it is very relieving to be able to finally announce the title in public. Since I started reading everyone’s responses to our first trailer online, I haven’t been able to stop grinning, and I don’t think it’s going to stop any time soon.

When I was in high school, I used to play the first Bayonetta game. To tell you the truth, it was one of the games that got me thinking about relocating to Japan in the first place. A number of years later, while I was on the market for a job after graduating from university, development had just been launched on Bayonetta 2, which prompted me to submit my resume to PlatinumGames. When development of the third game began, I was itching to be involved with the project and contribute my skills as a game designer. On the other hand, Kamiya and Inaba have another surprise in store for you.

They had been working in secret on a spin-off that would portray a different side of Bayonetta, when she did not have any weaponry, when she did not have any infernal demons under her control, and when she did not even have her distinctive swagger. When I considered the fact that these restrictions may give rise to whole new sorts of game play, I immediately realized that I needed to be engaged. I submitted a proposal for the game, and after a couple of somewhat nerve-wracking presentations, I was offered the position of director.

I saw Cereza as existing in between the innocent little girl who was shown in the first game and Bayonetta, the fearsome witch that we all know she will eventually become. When she initially attempted to call a demon, what were some of the thoughts that ran through her head? She must have learnt the spell to control that horrible beast, but there’s no way the demon would sit quietly by while a pipsqueak ordered it about like a petulant child! How would Cereza develop over the course of time as she began to take her initial steps toward becoming a full-fledged witch?

The scenario that Kamiya presented provided answers to the issues that were posed. This is the story of Cereza’s first excursion into the world of witchcraft, which she undertook with Cheshire, the first demon she ever conjured. As the director of the game, it was my responsibility to help the development team in bringing each element of the story and environment to life. Additionally, it was my responsibility to ensure that every action that players take with their fingers is in harmony with the narrative beats.

Cereza and the Lost Demon is, in many respects, unlike any other game that PlatinumGames has produced in the past, including any and all of the other entries in the series. This time around, rather than focusing on creating jaw-dropping Hollywood movie-esque spectacle and non-stop finale action, our primary objective is to convey a personal narrative set in a setting that is inspired by the delicate lines and pastel colors of an illustrated storybook. At times silent. At times dark… As the player (hopefully) leads Cereza and Cheshire to the conclusion of their journey, I want them to progressively develop feelings of attachment to both of these characters.

There is no age limit on a good fairytale, and the stories that your parents told to you when you were a little kid may remain with you for the rest of your life. We put forth our best effort to ensure that Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is also an experience that you will never forget. I really hope you will take a look inside and experience the enchantment that is waiting for you there…

On March 17, 2023, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon will be released on the Nintendo Switch platform.
