Pokemon Scarlet And Violet’s retail sales in Japan have reportedly overtaken those of its predecessor, Pokemon Sword And Shield, according to the database Game Data Library that tracks sales of video games in Japan. This is an incredible accomplishment taking into account that Scarlet/Violet has only been available for purchase for the last eight weeks, while Sword/Shield has been available for purchase for the past three years. This number does not take into account sales made via digital channels, which are likely to be far higher.
The total retail sales of Pokémon Scarlet / Violet have exceeded those of Pokémon Sword / Shield in Japan; this achievement was achieved in only eight weeks as opposed to three years. If digital sales are included, then the total must be at least 6 million, but I’d be willing to wager that it’s closer to 7 million or even more.
Even though Scarlet/Violet is more technically faulty than Sword/Shield, it seems that fans greatly favor Scarlet/more Violet’s ambitious take on the Pokemon model. At least this is the case in Japan. Time is the only factor that can tell us whether or not they will be successful in maintaining the forward momentum.
