Quake update version 1.6 – Threewave Capture the Flag added

The original Quake for Nintendo Switch has gotten a new 1.6 update that includes the Threewave Capture the Flag mod.

The way to score points in this mode is still to protect your flag, steal the enemy’s, and bring it back to your own flag. But power-up runes come into play to keep things interesting. In this version of Quake, the flag status has been improved, and the maps have been made to look better.

Quake update version 1.6

Capture the Flag with three waves (CTF)

Capture the Flag is like the backyard game in that you have to protect your flag, steal the other team’s flag, and bring it back to your own flag to get a point. Threewave CTF adds to this basic idea by giving teams power-up runes and the famous grappling hook to fight over.

Some new improvements

This new version of Quake has been updated with a better way to see if your flag is safe in base, team scoring, and a more modern interface. The lighting and fog effects on the included maps have been updated to be better. All of this is free and comes with Update 4, so you don’t need to download anything else.

Runes

At the start of the match, four power-up runes appear randomly on the map. Teams will fight over them because the people who have them get great benefits and stay with them until they die. When the player dies, they fly away, so keep an eye out for them and grab them as soon as you can to get their power. If no one picks them up, they will end up somewhere else. Having these runes gives your team the edge it needs to win.

  • Rune of Earth Magic | Resistance – Take half damage from all weapons
  • Rune of Black Magic | Strength: Every weapon does twice as much damage
  • Rune of Hell Magic | Haste: Most weapons fire twice as fast, and the speed of nail projectiles increases by the same amount.
  • Rune of Elder Magic | Regeneration: Replace up to 150 points of lost health and armor every second.

Grappling Hook

The grappling hook is more of a tool than a weapon. You can use it by turning the weapon wheel or pressing the key that is linked to the axe. When you press and hold the fire button, the hook will be shot straight forward until it hits a wall. Once you’re hooked on, the hook will pull you in very quickly. Attaching the hook to a player will cause a steady stream of damage, but the player you are attached to will be able to hurt you.

If you switch weapons while the hook is still attached, you’ll be able to hang off of walls and shoot, but you’ll be vulnerable because you won’t be able to move. This can be a good way to catch an attacker off guard, but it shouldn’t be used too often because ambushes only work when they’re a surprise.

Players who are good at the game can shoot the hook at the ground and let go as soon as the hook starts to pull them. This lets you start a bunny hop at a very high speed and makes you harder to track as you weave through the map.

Maps

Nine of the maps from the first mod are now part of our update.

  • McKinley Base is CTF1
    • Zoid Kirsch made it.
    • Two bases linked by bridges and a route that goes under water. The most famous map of the mod, it became a hit right away.
  • McKinley Station is CTF2
    • Zoid Kirsch made it.
    • The follow-up to McKinley Base, with bigger bases, a bigger flag room, and more routes. A classic and elegant
  • CTF3: Let the Blood Flow
    • Dale Bertheola made it.
    • There are catwalks and bridges that hang over lava and acid, as well as a wind tunnel that leads to the flag room and gives players plenty of chances to rush the defense and practice shooting skeets.
  • CTF4: Gloom Castles
    • Tim Willits made it.
    • A version of the classic E1M5: Gloom Keep in CTF format. Face to face, two Gloom Keeps. The front door is the fastest way to get somewhere, but also the most dangerous. Take the long way around and lose the defense.
  • Capturephobopolis is CTF5
    • American McGee made it.
    • The mouthful of a map is back, but this time there are flags on it. This time, the red team’s base is on top and the blue team’s base is below.
  • CTF6: Vertigo
    • Dale Bertheola made it.
    • Each flag has a big Quake Q on either side, watching over the three ways out of the flag room and the one-way wind tunnels.
  • The Strongbox is CTF7.
    • Brent McLeod made it.
    • The warehouse in the middle and the elevators and trains between bases make it easy to get into the tight flag rooms.
  • CTF8: The Capture House of Chthon
    • Tim Willits made it.
    • In the smallest map of the set, Chthon’s hellish domain has been turned into a base, making for intense combat where there is nowhere to hide.
  • CTF9: Da Ancient War Grounds
    • Matt Hooper made
    • Launch yourself over the moats into two traditional medieval castles and grab the flag from the throne room.
