Sonic Origins was launched to positive reviews and included HD versions of iconic 2D Sonic the Hedgehog games from the SEGA Mega Drive system.
Christian Whitehead created the Sonic CD remaster with his Retro Engine, and Christian Whitehead and Headcannon Games created Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Headcannon announced in April that they assisted with the remastered Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and a few months later we learned that the Sonic Origins project was produced in-house at SEGA.
However, Headcannon creator Simon Thomley (aka Stealth) has spoken out on Twitter about his dissatisfaction with the final result.
Headcannon noted the following
“This is aggravating. I won’t lie and claim there weren’t problems with what we supplied Sega, but what’s in Origins isn’t what we sent in.
“Integration produced several bizarre flaws that conventional reasoning would lead one to conclude were our fault – many of them aren’t.”
“With regard to Origins, we were outsiders working on a distinct project that was later wrangled into something completely different.” We knew there would be a timing limit, so we pushed ourselves to the bone to meet it simply so this could be completed and shared.
“Once again, I accept responsibility for mine and my team’s errors, and there were several.” Some true errors, some oversight, some rush jobs, and some things we saw but weren’t permitted to repair towards the finish. It’s far from flawless, and some of the flaws are our own. It’s difficult.
“I’m really pleased of my team for their work under such duress, but we’re all quite disappointed with the status of Origins and even the Sonic 3 component.” We weren’t delighted with its pre-submission status either, but a lot was out of our hands.
“We requested big changes close to submission but were denied owing to submission and approval criteria.” We inquired about delays early and often, but were informed they were not feasible.
“We volunteered to return for post-release repairs and upgrades; we do not yet know whether this will occur.”
