What do you do when a race of time-jumping beings from the future threaten to wipe humankind off the evolutionary map? Why, you grab the biggest, baddest weapons imaginable and blast them right back to where they came from, of course.

Welcome to TimeSplitters 2. A first-person shoot-’em-up crammed with enough guns, grenades and searing explosions to put the combined might of a year’s worth of Hollywood action flicks to shame. The aim: thwart the homo sapiens-hating aliens (the eponymous TimeSplitters) by stealing the crystals that power their time portal. The real aim: fill your face full of smile as you blast and puzzle your way through ten monstrous enemy-packed levels.

As the TimeSplitters dip in and out of history to execute their sinister plan, each level is set in a different time period. Expect to be dragged from modern-day Siberia, where zombies lurk beneath a colossal dam complex, to a 24th century Robot Factory, decked out in complex metallic scenery and littered with mission-thwarting futuristic shields – and beyond.

While intelligent missions and stealth are rife throughout TimeSplitters 2 – flip a switch here, creep past a security camera there, locate and collect the time crystal – it’s flying bullets that form the game’s real backbone. Sniper rifles, flamethrowers, plasma autorifles, Electro Tools with bolts that rebound terrifyingly off walls and scenery… wielding these monsters and levelling wave upon wave of bad guy is lip-smackingly good fun.

The perfectly-pitched play is carried over to one of the Nintendo GameCube’s finest multiplayer modes. Give up to three of your friends what for in 16 sprawling arenas, with Deathmatch, Capture-The-Bag and Last Stand just three of the slew of modes on offer. You can adjust everything from game speed to background music – and, incredibly, even design and save your own levels with the inbuilt Mapmaker. New characters, minigames, cheats and more are waiting to be unlocked through persistent play – but we guarantee you won’t need any such impetus to be still tearing enemies apart at 4am.

TimeSplitters 2 offers a near-flawless barrage of bad guys and bullets. Don’t miss it.
