Now we know why dinosaurs are extinct. Because of one man: Turok.

Since the series started on Nintendo 64 way back in 1997, the Turok name has become synonymous with bloodthirsty beasts and over-the-top weaponry. Now it’s Nintendo GameCube’s turn to host the next bout of dino-blasting, in Turok: Evolution.

Actually a prequel to the previous games, Turok: Evolution follows the exploits of a Native American, Tal’Set, who is accidentally transported from 1880s Texas to The Lost Land – a dimension where dinosaurs roam and the evil Lord Tyrannus wages war on the peaceful populace. Tal’Set is given the title of Turok, saviour of the people, and tasked with restoring harmony to the land – in the only way he knows how.

Turok: Evolution takes the familiar Turok action/exploration style to the next level, with an entirely new game engine and a clever artificial intelligence technique. Now enemies (and allies) will take cover, set up strategic positions, surrender or even run away if the heat of battle proves too much. But it’s the weapons that the Turok series has become most famous for, and Turok: Evolution doesn’t disappoint.

More than 30 armaments are available, including the brand new Gravity Disrupter Beam, Swarm Bore and Baby Nuke – plus classics like the Tek Bow and Mini-Gun make a reappearance. Now you can deal damage to the environment too, by blasting down trees and sending rocks crashing onto your enemies.

And yet another new addition is aerial missions, in which you can take to the skies on the back of a fully-armed flying dino. With an intense, action-packed one-player mode, a full range of multiplayer matches, and new features galore, this latest Turok title certainly lives up to the name ‘Evolution’.
