The 52-track Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope Original Game Soundtrack is now available. Grant Kirkhope, the composer of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, returned to soundtrack the new game, but he wasn’t working alone this time; he was joined by multi-award-winning musician Gareth Coker and famed Japanese composer Yoko Shimomura.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope’s audio director, Romain Brillaud, spoke with Ubisoft News about working with the group of three composers to produce the game’s music during a visit of the Ubisoft Milan studio.

How did your experience working on Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle inform Sparks of Hope?

After Kingdom Battle, we were able to collect some feedback from players on what they enjoyed and what didn’t go as planned. Romain Brillaud We wanted to go on and maintain this identity for the second game since Grant Kirkhope’s touch was one of the aspects of the music that stood out. The community may have responded extremely favorably to the attention to detail, whether it be in the setting or the sound effects. So we reasoned that this is a standard that Sparks of Hope must uphold.

On the other hand, I thought the game could have used more contrast and that Kingdom Battle had a certain amount of linearity. In order to increase contrast in the music and sound effects, Sparks of Hope set out to do just that.

How did you arrive with your decision to include more composers for Sparks of Hope? How did it feel to work with them?

Since Grant is such a brilliant composer and is so integral to the sound of our game—which is a big part of its overall identity—we really wanted to continue working with him. The goal was to maintain his style and color while while introducing new hues, feelings, speeds, and perspectives on battles.

Working with all three composers has been amazing because, for one thing, it gave me, the audio director, the opportunity to have three different versions of the same game. After that, switching from one composer to another adds uniformity. We keep them informed in a consistent manner, using the narrative, level design, game design, graphics, and animation as our foundation for the briefing. All of the composers’ work is built on these fundamental components.

The fact that all of the game’s tracks were recorded in the same location in Japan, in two separate studios, under the direction of Ms. Shimomura, is what truly binds the game together because every sound from every composer sounds the same. The same musicians perform them, and the same equipment was used to record them all. Because the same engineers blended it, there is consistency.

How do you produce the various audio effects for the open world and the battlefields? Why is it crucial to have that distinction?

The exploration field and the battles were intended to be quite different from one another. First off, unlike Kingdom Battle, we don’t always have music playing as we explore; instead, we depend on the ambient sounds of the environment. You need the music to motivate you on the battlefield to get the adrenaline flowing. We need the music to demonstrate that this is also a fast-paced tactical RPG. As a result, the dynamics between the exploration and the battlefield are really different, and we also employ very diverse sound textures.

Because they are songs that need to be particularly dramatic and stick out from the mix, for instance, all the crisp synthesizer gameplay is influenced by old anime with a contemporary twist. Because it would be too aggressive to do so, we wouldn’t employ them for exploration. Going into a large soundscape is easier when you feel connected to everything.
